Life and Work

For almost fifty years Markus Ettinger practised in Vienna as a lawyer specializing in cartel, competition, and economic administrative law. Ettinger produced specialist legal publications. He was one of the first to predict the failure of any planned economy, for "only the market price [is] a reliable regulator of demand" and of the "inflow and outflow of capital and labour from one branch of production into another" (Ettinger 1919, 10).
