BIOGRAPHY

Life and Work

A native of Görlitz in Saxony, Morgenstern studied political science in Vienna, became an assistant to Hans Mayer while still a student and took his doctorate in 1925. After several years of study abroad, he worked as a staff member at the Austrian Institute for Business Cycle Research under Friedrich August von Hayek and, two years later, became his successor. With Wirtschaftsprognose: Eine Untersuchung ihrer Voraussetzungen und Möglichkeiten (Economic Forecasting: An Examination of Its Premises and Possibilities) he gained his habilitation in 1929 and taught in Vienna until 1938. Owing to his intellectual brilliance and his considerable working energy, Morgenstern soon belonged to the inner circle of the Austrian School. As a university teacher, director of the Institute for Business Cycle Research, editor of the Zeitschrift für Nationalökonomie, board member of the Nationalökonomische Gesellschaft (Economic Society), adviser to the Austrian National Bank and the Ministry of Commerce, participant in the Mises private seminar, and as the initiator and author of regular columns on economic policy, he was active in almost every field. When Ludwig von Mises began, from 1933, to advocate his apriorism openly, Morgenstern distanced himself from him. His turn towards mathematics deepened still further the gulf that separated him from Mises. An escalation was probably avoided only because Mises soon moved to Geneva. In the course of the Anschluss to Hitler's Germany in 1938, Morgenstern was removed as director of the institute and lost his teaching licence. He subsequently emigrated to the United States, settled at Princeton University and, together with the mathematician John von Neumann (1903-1957), published the groundbreaking Theory of Games and Economic Behaviour (1944). Morgenstern soon ranked among the American elite of social scientists and worked for renowned "think tanks", the Atomic Energy Commission and the White House. He remained attached to his country of origin until his death, helping to initiate the founding of the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) in Vienna in 1963 and taking on a role on its scientific advisory board.
