BIOGRAPHY

Life and Work

Hermann Schwarzwald was born to Jewish parents in the crown land of Bukovina and studied law at the universities of Czernowitz (today Chernivtsi) and Vienna; in 1893 he was awarded a doctorate in law. After completing his court training in Czernowitz, the Menger student first worked at the Commercial Museum in Vienna and in the trade policy section of the Ministry of Trade. In 1917 Schwarzwald moved to the Ministry of Finance, where from 1919 to 1924 he headed the credit and currency section. Schwarzwald was one of the co-founders of the central bank. In addition, in 1918 he became deputy director of the Association of Moravian Sugar Factories in Olmütz (today Olomouc) and Vienna. After his retirement he served in 1924 and 1925 as a general councillor and president of the Anglo-Austrian Bank in Vienna. After that, until 1929, he held seats on the supervisory boards of various banks and industrial companies. From 1931 he was also a director of Dynamit Nobel AG in Pressburg (today Bratislava). He also wrote several works on currency and economic policy. Together with his wife Eugenie, an educator and a pioneer of girls' education, he hosted literary salons in which numerous intellectuals met. Barely a year after fleeing to join his wife, who was already in Switzerland, Schwarzwald died in Zurich.
